5 Innovations That Are Promoting Better Mental Health

May 1, 2018

Each month we celebrate innovations that make our lives better and this month, we want to celebrate technology that is helping us have better mental health.

Technology often gets a bad rap for making mental health worse - the constant scrolling of social media apps that leave us discontent and dissatisfied, the smartphone addiction, the disconnect from real life relationships.

But like most things in life, there’s a whole lot of good that accompanies any negatives associated with tech. Today we’re celebrating 5 apps that promote sound mental health.

Headspace

Headspace is a meditation app that helps users learn how to meditate. New users start with a 10 day introduction after which they can subscribe for daily meditations.

Each meditation is short, somewhere around 3 to 5 minutes although users can choose to do longer mediations if they wish.

What’s so great about meditating? Studies show that it helps reduce stress, increase attention spans, and improve emotional health. It may also help reduce age-related memory loss. Not too shabby for just a few minutes a day if you ask us.

Thrive Global

Thrive Global, founded by Arianna Huffington, has a few products that promote strong mental health.

First, the company has a corporate program that helps companies improve the overall well being and productivity of their employees. Then, Thrive Global also posts thought leadership articles about mental health, how to improve mental health, and overall wellness information..

Finally, the company has a suite of apps that encourage users to put their mental health first. Thrive Away, for instance, makes sure you don’t respond to your emails on vacation while the Thrive App helps you create and keep boundaries with tech.

Talkspace

Ever think you need a therapist, but don’t have the time to run to weekly or even monthly therapy appointments? Talkspace to the rescue.

This app connects users to a professional therapist. Users can subscribe for the basic plan that includes unlimited messaging with their therapist or upgrade to other plans that include live video calls. The app also offers therapy for couples.

Why is this app so awesome? It allows you to do therapy on your terms and within your schedule constraints. You can message your therapist at any time of the day or night, and if you have a question or a concern you don’t have to try to remember it at your next appointment. And overall, the cost of a monthly subscription is hundreds of dollars lower than the cost of a traditional therapist.

WeConnect

In a time when hundreds of thousands battle addictions, we’re in love with WeConnect. This app was created by a former addict who wanted to keep in touch with friends she made in rehab. She knew how important communication is in the recovery process.

This app helps users on the road to recovery overcome the sense of isolation they often feel on their rehab journey. The app also includes a reward system where users can work toward gift cards or free workout sessions.

Spire

You may already wear a fitness tracker on your wrist, but what about a monitor that senses your stress rate, your sleeping habits, and your overall health and offers suggestions to improve your overall health?

Spire is a monitor that you clip on to your favorite clothes and leave there. You can buy multiples to leave on your favorite sports bra or t-shirts. You can wash them with your laundry, and they don’t need to charged.

Instead of giving you insight into just your workout or how many steps you’ve walked today, Spire can tell when you’re stressed out, exhausted, or dehydrated and remind you to take a break, take a nap, or get some water.

Here’s to how technology is giving us a better future! What’s your favorite mental health tech?
